SMOO joined FGIA 2026 in Huntington Beach as the only Chinese architectural hardware manufacturer invited. Read our recap of the key fenestration industry trends and technical insights.

March 2–5, 2026 | Huntington Beach, California
Last week, our team had the honor of participating in the FGIA 2026 Annual Conference — one of the most influential gatherings for the North American fenestration and glazing industry. As the only Chinese architectural hardware manufacturer invited to this year’s event, we returned with fresh insights, stronger connections, and a clearer picture of where the industry is heading.
About FGIA: The Voice of North American Fenestration

For those unfamiliar, the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) was formed in 2020 through the merger of two long-standing organizations — AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturers Association) and IGMA (Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance). The alliance represents the full fenestration supply chain: from raw material suppliers and component manufacturers to window, door, and skylight fabricators, test laboratories, and industry consultants.
FGIA plays a central role in developing technical standards, shaping building code requirements, and guiding product certification in North America. Understanding FGIA’s work is essential for any manufacturer looking to serve this market with confidence.
Key Sessions We Attended

This year’s agenda focused heavily on real-world technical challenges and the next generation of product performance. Here are some of the sessions our team found most valuable:
March 3
Opening General Session and General Membership Meeting — The association outlined its strategic priorities for the coming year, with a strong emphasis on technical standard development and cross-industry collaboration.
PFAS and Paint: the Role of PVDF Finishes — This technical workshop addressed the growing regulatory pressure around PFAS and highlighted how PVDF coatings are becoming a preferred solution for durable, environmentally compliant surface protection on aluminum profiles and hardware components.
March 4
Hardware Hands-on Workshop | From Components to Performance — Through physical disassembly and reassembly, this session demonstrated how individual hardware components interact to determine the overall durability and physical performance of the complete window or door system.
Panel Discussion | Innovation in Factories and Offices – Enhancing our Workforce with Automation and Core Product Simplification — Industry leaders discussed how automation and streamlined product lines can help manufacturers address rising labor costs and skilled-worker shortages while maintaining consistent quality.
UL Research Institute's Fire Safety Research Institute Update | How Window Materials Perform Under Fire Exposure — Researchers shared the latest test data on how window materials — including glass, framing, and hardware — behave under real fire conditions. This is critical knowledge for facade design and building safety.
What We Learned as a Hardware Manufacturer

For SMOO, FGIA 2026 was more than an industry event. It was an opportunity to engage with the technical community at a deeper level.
1. A Seat at the Technical Table
Participating in standards discussions gave us direct insight into how technical requirements are developed — not just how to comply with them, but why they exist. This deeper understanding helps us support our OEM/ODM partners more effectively, especially when they need hardware that meets specific North American performance requirements.
2. Clearer Direction for Product Development
The conference agenda reflected a clear shift from “meeting minimum function” toward “optimizing long-term performance.” For us, this validates our ongoing focus on corrosion resistance, cycle durability, and finish performance — areas that directly impact the lifetime of a window or door system.
3. Practical Guidance on Certification
Conversations with FGIA technical experts gave us actionable insights into AAMA certification requirements related to hardware configuration. This is particularly valuable for our customers in China and overseas who need to avoid compliance risks caused by component changes. We returned with a better roadmap for helping our partners navigate the certification process smoothly.
Looking Ahead

FGIA 2026 reminded us why we invest in technical excellence: real-world performance matters, and trusted partnerships are built on shared knowledge. If you are looking for a reliable OEM/ODM partner for architectural window and door hardware, we would be glad to talk.
